Linking in action: Gaining pre-employment skills - James' story

James and his co-workers at Bunnings

Left to right: Jessica, Renai, James, Nicole, Helen.

Denise, James' mum first contacted Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation's Ability Links NSW program looking for support in assessing the NDIS for children James and Jessica, James' sister.

Linker Renai worked alongside Denise through each step of the process and finally James and Jessica received their NDIS plans.

Through the process it was apparent that James was passionate about securing a steady job in the future. Luckily the Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation (IAC), which delivers the Ability Links program, also operates Warrigal Employment. Warrigal Employment is a service that aims to support and guide Aboriginal people on their journey to employment and wellbeing.

Renai referred James to Warrigal Employment’s New Careers for Aboriginal People (NCAP) program and James worked alongside Helen the Employment Advisor to find an initial volunteer role. Under Warrigal Employments Work Experience program James secured a spot at Bunnings Warrawong.

James is so excited and is ready to commence work at 7am each morning, his shifts don't start until 9am!

Renai or Helen support James by assisting him in this new opportunity and stay with him throughout shifts providing social and cultural support.

Mum Denise cannot believe the change in James since he has started at Bunnings, his confidence has skyrocketed and he walks with a kick in his step and a new found sense of purpose. Denise is very thankful for all he advocacy and the tailored assistance Renai and Helen provide for James.

Ability Links has actively worked to fill the gaps that exist in the NDIS journey and ensure that James has ongoing support required to support his future career aspirations.

Well done James and Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation Linker team!
